Suomen Metsä: A Heartfelt Mission for Forest Protection and Climate Action
Suomen Metsä is a charity organization that I had the privilege of founding in January 2022. The mission of the charity is simple, yet profound: to safeguard and protect the endangered forests of Southern Finland, particularly those surrounding the capital area of Helsinki. Through this organization, we aim not only to preserve the natural beauty of these forests but to ensure that they continue to thrive for future generations, serving as vital ecosystems for wildlife, climate regulation, and the health of our planet as a whole.
The challenge we face today is urgent and undeniable. Deforestation and environmental degradation are accelerating at an alarming rate, threatening the delicate balance of our ecosystems. Climate change continues to ravage landscapes, making large swathes of land unusable. At the same time, private markets often turn a blind eye to the irreversible damage they contribute to by exploiting these areas for short-term gain. These environmental issues are not merely the responsibility of governments and large organizations—they are a collective responsibility that we all must share. The protection of our forests and natural resources should be a cause that unites us, transcending political boundaries and individual interests.
At its core, Suomen Metsä is about empowering local communities and individuals to take action in a meaningful way. By raising awareness and driving tangible conservation efforts, we are not just protecting forests; we are protecting a way of life that has sustained us for centuries. We are rekindling a deeper connection with nature, one that understands the intrinsic value of forests beyond their economic worth. Through our work, we strive to remind people that protecting nature is not just an environmental issue—it is a moral and cultural imperative that will define the world we leave behind for future generations.
A Non-Profit Dedicated to Real Change
Suomen Metsä is a 100% non-profit organization, and every cent we raise goes directly towards the acquisition and protection of endangered forestland. We operate with full transparency, and we are deeply committed to ensuring that our resources are utilized effectively and responsibly. Our work is fueled by the generosity of individuals, communities, and partners who understand that protecting these forests is an investment in the future—not only for the environment but for the very communities that depend on these natural spaces for their well-being.
Since our inception, we have made significant strides in fulfilling our mission. To date, we have successfully raised over €70,000, funds that have gone directly towards the acquisition and protection of more than 7 hectares of critically endangered forestland along the border of Inkoo and Lohja. This land represents not just a patch of earth, but a sanctuary for wildlife, a carbon sink that helps mitigate the effects of climate change, and a peaceful retreat that will continue to provide both environmental and social benefits for decades to come.
The forests we are safeguarding are irreplaceable. The trees that stand in these ancient woodlands are not just a part of Finland's natural heritage—they are also essential in our fight against the climate crisis. Our work is both urgent and ongoing, and we remain resolute in our commitment to expanding our conservation efforts to protect as much forestland as possible.

Building a Movement Through Community Engagement
What truly sets Suomen Metsä apart is the way we engage with local communities to drive change. We understand that conservation cannot be achieved in isolation—it requires collective action, education, and participation. That’s why one of the central pillars of our mission is to raise awareness through exciting, community-driven initiatives that bring people together in support of our cause.
From organizing charity events such as forest walks, tree planting days, and educational workshops, to hosting fundraising concerts, art exhibitions, and nature-based activities, we have created spaces where individuals of all ages and backgrounds can connect with nature and learn about the critical importance of forest preservation. These activities are not only an opportunity to raise funds but also to inspire and empower people to become active stewards of the environment.
One of the most rewarding aspects of our work has been witnessing how these events unite people. Families, school groups, local businesses, and passionate individuals come together to support our cause, demonstrating a shared commitment to protecting the natural world. These events are more than just fundraisers; they are opportunities for people to reconnect with the earth, experience its beauty, and leave with a renewed sense of responsibility.
We are deeply grateful for the enthusiasm and energy of our supporters. Whether it’s volunteering their time, donating funds, or spreading the word about our work, their involvement helps us amplify our message and expand our reach. Together, we are building a movement—a movement that is fueled by the collective power of individuals who care deeply about the environment and want to make a positive, lasting impact.

A Strong Partnership with the City of Helsinki and Affiliates
Since its founding, Suomen Metsä has made significant strides in establishing a broad network of partners and collaborators. We are proud to be an official partner of the City of Helsinki, working together to protect green spaces and promote sustainable land use practices. This partnership has allowed us to integrate our conservation efforts into broader citywide initiatives and to reach a wider audience, ensuring that our work is not just a local effort but part of a larger, nationwide movement toward environmental sustainability.
In addition to our partnership with the City of Helsinki, we are fortunate to work alongside a number of incredible organizations and affiliates. These partners include other non-profits, environmental groups, and businesses who share our commitment to protecting Finland’s natural landscapes. Their support, expertise, and resources are invaluable in helping us achieve our mission, and we are grateful for the collaborative spirit that defines our work.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Suomen Metsä
As the founder of Suomen Metsä, I served as the Chairman of the Board from its inception in January 2022 until January 2025, and I am now honored to serve as the Vice Chairman. Reflecting on the progress we’ve made, I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished. However, there is still much work to be done, and the need for action is more pressing than ever.
The challenges of deforestation, climate change, and habitat destruction continue to evolve, but so too does our resolve. We remain committed to expanding our efforts, acquiring more forestland, raising more funds, and engaging even more people in our cause. With the continued support of our incredible team, partners, and supporters, I am confident that we will continue to make a meaningful difference in the preservation of Finland’s forests—and in the global fight against climate change.
In the end, Suomen Metsä is not just about saving trees—it’s about saving the future. It’s about creating a world where nature thrives alongside humanity, and where generations to come can inherit a planet that is rich in biodiversity, clean air, and healthy ecosystems. Together, we can make that vision a reality.
